Tiffany Chung
'UNHCR records and figures: remapping regional movements, arrivals and resettlements of V-refugees in 1979
2016
Tiffany Chung is a Vietnamese-American artist whose creations span painting, sculpting, drafting, videography, photography, and performance art, with a primary emphasis on questions such as relocation, refugees, and borders. As made clear by the title of the artwork, in this work the artist has, after a significant amount of research and surveys, produced a map depicting the movements of Vietnamese refugees after 1979. The piece attempts to force us to come face to face with the refugee crisis and the wounds inflicted on affected parties by changing refugee policies. The artist herself was, in fact, a refugee; she fled to the United States from southern Vietnam in 1975. Chung uses cartography to reproject history and to document data and facts that might not be included in official records.
